Catholic Charities is an organization dedicated to supporting the most pressing social issues families, children and individuals face. Santuario del Corazón (SDC) has been working with Catholic Charities (CC) since early 2020 in various activities supporting asylum seekers. As a result of this promising partnership, an opportunity was born for SDC to receive a private donation from CC to support families in Rio Arriba and Taos with financial assistance to cover their monthly rent. Thanks to this fund, more than 20 families were able to benefit from the financial help to maintain their home and, for some, avoid eviction.
Patricia R. is a single woman from Taos, NM. She migrated to the U.S.A. from Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico in 2011. As an immigrant, she has encountered a number of pressing challenges from domestic violence, abuse, and discrimination. A single parent she has worked as a housekeeper and cleaned houses on the weekends. As a result of COVID-19, however, Patricia lost her job, and given her status, she’s unable to apply for any state or federal assistance. Thanks to the Catholic Charities Fund, Patricia was able to stay in her home and avoid eviction. The provider assigned to her case worked extensively with the landlady to ensure she was understanding of Patricia’s situation. Patricia expressed feeling “contenta por el apoyo de gente bondadosa que la apoya a todo paso que toma.”
