Las Cumbres Community Services, in partnership with St. James Episcopal Church, was honored to host the Mexican Consulate Mobile Unit, the NM Immigrant Law Center, and a range of other community partners in Taos on September 24th. The event took place at St. James Episcopal Church and offered information and resources on education, health, violence prevention, mental and behavioral health, and other services. The Consulate’s Mobile Unit provided assistance with Passports, Birth Certificates, Matricula Cards (photo identification), and voting identification cards, and more than 70 people received one or more of these documents. Presbyterian Medical Services’ Community Health Team also delivered COVID-19 vaccines to 161 people and flu vaccines to 47 people.
Other partners at the event included New Mexico’s Children, Youth and Families Department, Communities Against Violence, Compostela Community and Family Cultural Institute, Taos Municipal Schools, Taos Immigrant Allies, the Valencia Shelter, and the University of New Mexico Community Health Department.
Families expressed gratitude for the resources and opportunities available at the event. One person said, “Gracias al consulado mobil ahora puedo obtener los documentos que necesito para aplicar para mi licencia.” (“Thank you to the mobile Consulate – now I can obtain the documents I need to apply for my license.”) Another person remarked, “Perdi mi acta de nacimiento y me senti como si no tienia identidad, entonces pude obtener una nueva a traves del consulado mobil y me siento como una.” (“I lost my birth certificate and felt like I didn’t have an identity; now I was able to obtain a new one through the mobile Consulate, and I feel like I have an identity again.”)
Las Cumbres and the Santuario del Corazón program are delighted that the Consulate joined us for this event and look forward to future partnership opportunities as we seek to serve the entire Taos County community.
