The LANL Foundation recently awarded the agency's Santuario del Corazón (SDC) program funding for their work in social-emotional learning done with immigrant families.

SDC representatives and Development and Communications staff were invited to an initial Education Enrichment Grantee Cohort meeting organized by LANL Foundation where the grantor unveiled their theory of change. The premise of the theory being that:

  • Engaged communities, along with outstanding school boards, educators, principals, and schools leads to...

  • Improved learning opportunities and outcomes, which leads to...

  • Whole child development, which leads to...

  • Pathways to careers and thriving, engaged communities.

“We are thrilled to be part of a group of nonprofits working on related issues and challenges,” said Jeremy Varela, Development and Communications Associate at Las Cumbres Community Services.  “We applaud the LANL Foundation to have the vision to bring us together for the benefit of the greater goal.”

Santuario del Corazón actively works with immigrant families to guide them to resources and engage in the communities where they live.  A majority of the Santuario families have school-aged children and the program Family Navigators has been spending much of the year getting them access to equipment and the internet.  “We found that many students were in need of tutoring to better understand lessons and we were able to work that into their plan,” said Jose Gonzalez, SDC Program Manager.  “We are looking forward to networking with other local nonprofits through this LANL Foundation inspired cohort to share knowledge and experiences to collaboratively enhance our impact in the communities we serve.”
