Las Cumbres’ Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program is highlighted in the December 25th issue of the Santa Fe New Mexican. The trend of Grandparents taking on this responsibility has been growing every year. Las Cumbres Community Services is thankful to the Santa Fe New Mexican and Daniel Chacón for covering this emerging family dynamic in a thoughtful and caring way.
“Across Northern New New Mexico and throughout the nation, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even great-grandparents are making sacrifices and taking on the life-changing responsibility of raising children whose parents are unwilling or unable to care for their kids themselves.” Read more of this story.
Here are some tips to help families in this situation:
Take grandchildren on an outing to give grandparents some down time.
Assist grandparents to run errands. This saves them gas and provides company for them while also taking care of responsibilities.
Cook a meal of their liking or have meal delivered to them. This takes an important task off their to dos for the day.
