Local Artists And Adult Service Attendees Share Talents!
Art has a magical ability to unite us and celebrate our individuality. At Las Cumbres Community Services, local artists join Adult Day Services attendees to share their talents. The vibrant outcome? The result is a dazzling array of one-of-a-kind artworks, each as exquisite as the relationships forged during these art sessions.
At Las Cumbres’ Day Services, differently-abled adults have the opportunity to learn new skills, socialize, and enjoy various activities in a safe and supportive environment. Thanks to support from funders such as United Way of Northern New Mexico, these programs are enhanced, turning the vision of connecting with local groups into reality.
In April 2024, local artist Sherry Apodaca shared her knowledge of pastels with Day Services attendees. Everyone became an artist that day, with pastel-shaded fingers exploring techniques like cross-hatching and Q-tip blending. Ms. Apodaca, an Acoma Pueblo potter, volunteers to lead several art classes with Adult Services. She was taught by her parents and grandfather about the importance of her culture and who she is. She explains that she follows those teachings to this day, expressing all that she is through her art. Her traditional name, “Kumaidza,” means “always changing, always growing,” reflecting her desire never to paint the same design twice on her pottery.
Curiosity and creativity buzzed through the room as everyone experimented with colors and shapes. Comments like, “Oh, I want to do that on mine,” and “Wow, I made a flower!” filled the air as the class progressed.
By the end of the class, many attendees proudly showcased their art pieces to anyone who would look and listen. This was more than just an art class—it showed agency Day Services attendees that they can achieve great things and that their art and presence are valued in the community.
